Thankfully, though, we have a few tricks up our sleeve. Keep reading to see how to keep your rental furniture fresh and clean.
Use a door mat.
Even if it's not raining or muddy outside, you'd be amazed at how much dirt your dog's paws will track inside every time they enter your apartment. Place a paw mat at your front door so that any mud or grime on your dog's feet can be wiped onto the mat immediately upon entering.
There are various brands of paw mats that you can buy, but a microfiber chenille doormat is the most absorbent. How absorbent? We're talking a doormat that soaks up about seven times its weight in water, dirt and grime. That's sure to make a difference in keeping your rental furniture a little cleaner.
Bathe your pet weekly.
The cleaner you keep your pet, the cleaner your rental furniture will be. We recommend giving your dog a bath every week, especially if Rover is frequently playing with other rambunctious pups in your apartment's dog park.
If you're having a difficult time getting your dog into the bathtub every single week, at least shoot for twice a month. Trust us, your dedication to bath time will make a noticeable difference in your rental furniture's cleanliness.
Wipe your pet down.
Regardless of how often you're bathing your dog (or cat), get in the habit of wiping them down with grooming wipes. You can purchase these for less than $15 on Amazon, and they're available as hypo-allergenic and fragrance-free.
Use the wipes to wipe your pet down every time they enter the house. They're also great for cats since most pet owners rarely give their cats a full bath.
Use furniture slip covers.
Furniture slip covers are great for two reasons.
- You can protect your rental furniture from pet hair and other damage, and
- You can wash them whenever you want to avoid odors.
When you're renting furniture, buying furniture covers may not be the most cost-effective solution, but it is one of the most time-effective ways to combat pet issues with furniture.
Throw in some vinegar with the laundry.
Vinegar is great for neutralizing odors. Add a half cup of vinegar to wash cycles any time you're washing laundry that might carry pet odor — your dog's bed, furniture slip covers, or pillows covered in cat hair.
Don't dry until the odor is gone.
Tossing linens and pillows that smell like your pet into the dryer will cause the odor to set into the fabric. Instead, smell items after you wash them. If you still smell your favorite furry companion on that bed sheet, put it back in the washer and run the load again. Better to wash it two or three times before drying it than to wash it once and then seal the odor in.
Absorb pet odors with baking soda.
Baking soda is another great odor neutralizer. Sprinkle it on your carpets, couches, and beds to absorb pet odors, and then vacuum up the baking soda, bad smells, pet dander and fur all at once!
